First day back in the studio

Yesterday I spent the majority of the day in the studio painting, it felt great!  Here's a detail and an image of something I have started for this semester.  Not a great photo just a point and shoot to show how it's unfolding.  Not quite sure how I feel about it.  Am trying to paint with more opacity and avoid using any glazing.  Also, am working from an image source this time around.  During critiques there was a lot of discussion about cellular/organic qualities.  I started looking at different sites about brain imaging and neurons and found some interesting imagery that resonates with what I believe I want to convey in my work, so here we go.  I have no idea where this will lead so we'll see....it's only the beginning.

  1. Nice. Is there a reason you're going to try to focus more on opacity, rather than using your usual transparency?

  2. It was a suggestion during one of the crits but to be perfectly honest, I am absolutely hating what's happening with the painting. It doesn't feel true or something, I don't know what it is that is bothering me. It's a little stressful. :\

  3. As you and I discussed, transparency seems essential to the delivery of your concept. I think it's admirable to give the opacity a shot--but in the end, follow that gut instinct. :-)
