the beginning

Well, Here it goes!  This feels incredibly uncomfortable... This is the second canvas I received, it is from a writer.  She has dealt with some what I think insurmountable obstacles in her life.  But she is strong and this is what she gave to me to work with:

Below is the beginning of what I've done with the above piece.  I don't feel as if they are complete but think it's a start.  I've cut the parts of the canvas with words on them and stitched them together, wrapped them in cheesecloth and then soaked them in wax.  they look a little odd and maybe too much like rawhide (that's weird isn't it?!)  But I'm still trying to decide what to do next with these parts of her story.

All But One

I received all the pieces of canvas back except one.  It got lost on its way home!  I must confess, I'm still  holding out some hope that it finally arrives at my door, but I think it is truly lost. But considering the nature of this project I sort of find it interesting and appropriate.  I'm finding that each one has indeed created their own history, there have been some touching stories shared. The ideas that are coming through as each piece has been returned seems as important, I believe, as the actual project.

I am stunned and so grateful by the outpouring of support with regards to this project!

Anyway, I'm not sure the best way to post about each piece. I think I will do it the same way I did the first one, document the beginning and show the finished piece.

Since they did come home with amazing stories I will post the stories along with the images.

I also met with my mentor this past week.  It was fantastic!  I had been feeling so uncomfortable and well...LOST!  But, Leslie put my mind at ease and encouraged me. Through our discussions she let me know I'm in the right place.  I'm making scale shifts, color changes, and 2-D to 3D shifts as well, exciting stuff.   Leslie shared phenomenal insight and always, yes always, asks the right question that propels you to the next phase.

I had been doing all those little drawings/ paintings and really was unhappy with all of them but she was able to pull information out that are direct links to where I need to go with the rest of the semester and the canvasses.  WOO!

SO EXCITED about where all this is going.  I will start posting the images after I have completed some of the arrivals.

Cheers Everybody!
Happy St. Patty's Day!

upcoming drop dead date!

I'm getting the majority of the canvas pieces back now and am anxious to get started working on the new arrivals.  I am picking up three this week and waiting for three to arrive in the mail too.  Friday is the drop dead date, so I made the decision that however many I have received on that date are the ones I'll be working on for the remainder of the semester.

As I stated in my last post, I've been working on some small drawings/paintings while waiting for the canvas.  I also did some other experiments too to see how and what I could do to the canvases when they arrive.  I have been adding stitching and wax to  a number of things and find the physicality of the work is satisfying and has added a new dimension and offered some excitement for me that I had found was lacking.

So, here are a few of the drawings and objects I've made this past month.
